Best Manager of recent times?
In terms of personal enjoyment and footballing experience - which manager was the best to watch Sunderland under?
Reid
Sgt Bilko and Cotterill (yeah right!)
Mick Mac
Bally
Quinn
Keane
Sbragia
Bruce
For me, The Keane Era was a massive boost as a supporter, particularly considering the rubbish we had endured under the final years of Bob Murray - remember the hype of Quinn and Keane together and going to his first game in charge - we beat Derby at Pride Park 2-1 - Chris Brown and Ross Wallace scored and there were debuts for Kenny Cunningham, Dwight Yorke, David Connolly, Ross Wallace, Graham Kavanagh
But nothing can beat that feeling of being 2nd in the Premiership at Christmas under Reid......

Re: Best Manager of recent times?
Reid or Keane. I was probably a bit too young during the Reid era, I didn't really know how good we had it, by the time Keane came around we'd had such a terrible few years that just the fact that he gave us our pride back was really important. To me, my best times were with Keane in charge (and latterly, in fits and starts, with Bruce), but I'd imagine many posters who are even just a couple of years older than me will say Reid.
Looking at that list's pretty depressing like, the combined footballing IQ of our managers for the last 15 years is really nothing to write home about.

Re: Best Manager of recent times?
Reid by a fucking mile- his championship season was much more enjoyable than Keanes ones and the PL ones were much better than Keanes. The rest are nowhere near

Loved it when Keane was manager but totally agree.
Having a front two like Quinn and Phillips was quality, pisses on Jones and Chopra

Oh aye, I enjoyed Keanes time as well but Reids was better in every way. I loved Keane turning our season round and winning us the league in his only CCC season but it wasnt like the 105 point season. I loved seeing us survive after our previous two dreadful PL attempts, but it wasnt like Quinn and Phillips in full flow and genuinely competing at the top end of the table for part of a season as we did with Reid. Keane got us the home win over the mags like, but then Reid did them away from home, and more than once! Then there were memorable games under Reid, most famously the play off final of course, and the fact that Keane's team never played as exciting, entertaining football as Reid's lot did. I can see this thread being a bit of a landslide tbh

Immagine if we had our board (Quinny player/chairman) then we would have challenged massivly for trophies and Champions League.

Re: Best Manager of recent times?
Keane for the marquee value it gave the club for a little while. But Reid was the best by far.

Definitely, would have been immense! The Reid years were class though, although the lack of squad strengthening was a pain when we were riding high in the league and I always thought it was a daft decision not to enter the intertoto cup after the 7th places. I know it extends your season and all that, but we could have done with the boost of being involved in european competition- at worst we could have played a weakened side and treated it as a pre season exercise to see how it went, we needed pre season games anyway so i really didnt see a downside to giving it a go.

In order:
Reid
Keane
Bruce
MMc
Bally
Sbragia
Quinn
Sgt. Wilko
Could swap Bruce and Mick, but the lows of Mick are much worse than the lows of Bruce, but with Mick we had some really good highs. Ah, an FA Cup run! Made me think of '92!
