The black cats have been associated with Sunderland supporters for over a century, IIRC there's a picture of a supporters badge for the 1913 FA Cup final with a big black cat in the middle of it, and teh supporters association had a black cat as their logo in the late 60's / 70's when I started supporting them. This is all way before the marketing ploy that spurned "The Rokerites".
This has been talked about frequently on here, but the reason we've such an association with black-cats is that during the Napoleonic wars, there was a gun battalion stationed at the mouth of the Wear which was nicknamed The Black Cats (I don't know why) and the nickname passed onto the supporters of the club when it was formed.
So to suggest that black-cats has only been applied since a local poll in the Echo is laughable.
Wonder how the Mags got their nickname ?

Did Joke reply to this post or did he, as I suspect, ignore it because he was made to look a fool? Same as he does whenever he is caught posting on threads not related at all to NUFC, despite protesting numerous times they are the only threads he posts on.
