The black cats have been associated with Sunderland supporters for over a century, IIRC there's a picture of a supporters badge for the 1913 FA Cup final with a big black cat in the middle of it, and teh supporters association had a black cat as their logo in the late 60's / 70's when I started supporting them. Wonder how the Mags got their nickname ?

Did Joke reply to this post or did he, as I suspect, ignore it because he was made to look a fool? Same as he does whenever he is caught posting on threads not related at all to NUFC, despite protesting numerous times they are the only threads he posts on.

I know all this black cats stuff dates back years but lets be honest, before sky invented football we were the Rokerites. I`d never heard of black cats as our nickname before that if i`m honest although saying that I`m sure I have vague memories of some cats kill magpies type chant from the late 70s/early 80s.

I just assumed black cats was resurrected as it sounded trendier in the new era of football.

There was a black cats club at Roker Park, we even had inflatable Black Cats. Its been associated with Sunderland for years. Its part of the badge for the SAFCSA

I just can`t really remember black cats being bandied around as our nickname when I was growing up 70s / 80s

Was there some sort of cats kill magpies chant, or have I dreamt it.

It wasn't our 'official' nickname but Black Cats has been associated with Sunderland for years.

I had a 1985 Milk Cup Final flat cap with a Black Cat on the top, and I also had a flag on my bedroom wall that had a black cat with a Sunderland top on from around the same time.
