Default Copying DVDs, computers, iPad and complicated stuff

I've got a DVD and want to convert the DVD into a computer file so I've arsed about on the internet for about 3 hours, downloaded a DVD decrypter program and 2 other programs but I've not got a clue what I'm doing.

In simple steps how do I convert a DVD into a computer file format that I can then watch on the computer? I want to know this so that when I get an iPad I can copy the files from the computer or an SD card and then watch them on the iPad.

Shrink dvd will only break the copyright and make the dvd a more manageable size.
