    Default Care home costs

    Wise SMBers

My dad is 96. just had to go into a care home. He part-owns a house (50%) and has £15k in the bank. His pension income is about £800 per month.

Council say he has to pay full fees which seems wrong to me.

    Any advice would be appreciated

    Thanks

Thanks for that but making a will is a longer term option. Actually not many people with assets thinks about this seriously till its too late.

It is hard to assume we will end up in care homes but if you have a few quid, it might all have to go back to the state. So get rid early is the obvious advice to anyone facing the prospect.

But there must still be some immediate action I can take to reduce the costs of care?

Sure the amount is £23k ish. Until he has got that amount in hand (assets) he won't be full fee I don't think. All depends on the house situation though.

Get him to add you to a joint account with the cash, I'm not sure about the house but I think he may be able to add you as joint owner too

Considering that the biggest owner of care homes in the country has just gone tits up and given 750 homes back to landlords who dont want to run them but have no choice temporarily and that the next couple of major owners are also in the financial shite expect the burden to fall further back onto families and assets in the very near future..

Disgusting the way the elderly are treated in this country. Milked for as much as they can be, money and dignity.
