WTF? Private plate on police car???

Was just driving down Wearfield towards Sunderland BIC and drove past a copper standing on the other side of the road. Then an unmarked black Jaguar XK with a registration of POL 1C came up the road past me towards the standing copper.

I did not see if the copper got in the Jag or not.

My questions are, am I making a false connection here, has anyone seen this car before or know if it is a real cop car, and if so, what is our police service doing lashing out on private registration numbers for cop cars?
