Default Roker ParK World Cup 1966

45 years ago today the first match at Roker was held in 1966. Italy beat Chile 2 - 0 in front of a 30,000 crowd. It was a Wednesday as well. Kick off was at 7.30 pm. One for the historians.

Wonder which was the favourite pre match watering hole then?

Would have been the Wheatsheaf in Boldon..if I hadn't been 10 years old and going with my dad.

Was my one and only world cup game I ever saw live

Not sure what the capacity was but IIRC the Fullwell End had temporary seats put in for the WC so the capacity would have been reduced a bit.

I guess the Geordies all boycoutted it since games were not being played at SJP anarl.

The Fulwell had just been roofed. I can still remember the noise of the open topped Roker and Fulwell.
