    Default Looking for a NAS

Looking for a NAS to rip all my music to, as part of my latest home project to stream music all around the house.

    Any recommendations ?

Also anyone have any experience with Sonos hardware.

This is by far the cheapest option. Attach any external USB Hard Drive (or stick) to it and it will network it (share it) on all your PC's. It will also share scanners and printers too

Ive sold quite a few of these to businesses who dont want a full server but need a file sharing server.

I have a Netgear ReadyNas with 2x500MB drives. Been excellent.
There is a ReadyNas Ultra which is supposed to be better.

Time it right and Netgear normally give you a free drive.

I have A QNAP 210 turbo 2 x 1gb that I use with my sonos and it works great. I use a couple of 2 port power lines so my sonos and bluray ( streaming films) are effectively hardwired to the NAS. I haven't fathomed out how to get it working as a print server yet though.

I've got a Synology Diskstation DS 211J which does everything I need it to. I did look at QNAP which were slightly better but the Synology gear was a fair bit cheaper and almost as powerful.

Disgusting wastes of money imho (except for the ultra cheapies like the USB one above). Better off building a small server PC and doing other things with it too.

Why would you want a naval air squadron to rip your music to?

The ReadyNas is very small and you can add apps such as BitTorrent.
I agree though the USB device above looks decent.

    This.

There's a neat little HP microserver whick costs little over £100 once you claim the £100 cashback offer currently in it.

Take the shitty little disk out, throw it away, and put in up to 4 x 1Tb SATA disks (or bigger).

Download a copy of FreeNAS, (or OpenFiler), burn it onto a bootable USB stick, plug it into the motherboard, set up BIOS to boot from the motherboard USB.

    Jobs a good 'un.

Or just get a cheapo usb thingy.
