Default Computer Techies Help: Visual Problem

Got a problem with my computer with the way the monitor on my computer shows the screen with lines on the picture, hard to explain really but it isn't a monitor problem as I've had the computer on 3 different monitors.

    Picture:

I guessed it could be something to do with graphics card.

Looks like a graphics card problem. Have you overclocked it by any chance?

In that case, check the graphics card fan is spinning. Then pull the gfx card out and look at the capacitors, the large cylindrical things of which there should be a few. If the tops are domed or burst, there's the fault.

Could also be a graphics memory chip or the GPU.

Depends if graphics card seperate or on motherboard.

If its on motherboard, then nowt you can do to fix the on board graphics, but you should be able to put seperate graphics card in ok

If seperate graphics card already, just buy like for like replacement and swap it - 2 mins job once case is off.

Artifacts - my guess would be heat.

Get into it and get the dust out, especially on any graphics card heat sink and fan.

Install Speedfan and see what temps it reports.

Could also be a thermal or RAM problem.

Can you download, burn and boot from a Ubuntu CD?
