Default Bent - a personal appreciation

On some thread yesterday I posted my opinion on the top 3 over-rated SAFC players: Arca, Son of Pele and our current one-dimensional legend in the making. So I am not changing my tune here.

    For Villa fans:

Bent will score a good amount of goals for you. However, to provide for his one-dimensional game playing 'off the shoulder of the last defender' as they say, you will have to constantly give the ball away to the opposition. Assume about 40% possession for Villa from now on.

Corner kicks: Bent might score from a knock down but don't expect him to challenge in the air.

Dribbling: For a supposed superstar forward, Bents dribbling skills are non-existent.

Holding the ball up: He can usually lay it off to a team-mate but don't expect anything creative.

Greatest Strength: Manages to ghost into goalscoring positions unnoticed. Sometimes spectators forget he is playing too.

Relation ship with fans: Well he is a badge kisser - so most love him. I think a few of our fans wised up to his limitations when they saw Gyan and Welbeck in partnership.

His price tag: Whatever we can get as long as it is enough to buy a good all-round footballer - maybe like a young Kevin Phillips.

We all love it when a goal is scored - and Bent has scored a lot for us. But do you seriously enjoy watching him play the way you can enjoy say Welbeck on the ball? Look at their respective involvement in games.

Couldn't have put it better myself. People bemoan the lack of goals from midfield but our midfielders daren't come forward because he doesn't hold it long enough. I am hoping that fully fit Welbeck and Gyan will make us forget about Bent in the coming weeks.

This, for me. I remember watching Gyan in the World Cup, and Forlan, and a few others, and being astonished at their striking prowess as it wasn't anything like the strikers I'd seen at Sunderland bar sir Kev, as they could score *outside the box* and with both feet and strike the ball with power and accuracy, use their speed and strength to get round the defenders and make chances. Welbeck and Gyan have continued to show that this season, whereas Bent hasn't looked anywhere near capable in front of goal.

He's the best poacher I've ever seen, but as you say he thrives on broken play and bitty chances. We've been playing good football this season though and he's been put through on goal this season time and time again and rarley looked remotley like scoring.

I cannot believe how ludicrously over-rated Danny Wellbeck is. It defies belief.
