barton... he's just misunderstood
Quote:

Barton is playing some great football at the moment and its time the media chucked this framing of him as some kind of Hannibal Lecter of sport and concentrated on the lads football. His rabbit punch on Pederson was indefensible but it was more daft than the calculated malice we have seen our midfielder on the end of.

'Disgusting' Barton abuse must stop Pardew
Revelation ... Joey Barton.

Published Date: 05 January 2011
JOEY Barton's long been labelled one of the bad boys of English football.
But the Newcastle United midfielder, by his own admission, worked hard on and off the pitch to curb his "anger issues".
And manager Alan Pardew has found Barton to be a model professional since arriving at St James's Park.

Pardew has launched a staunch defence of Barton ahead of tonight's home game against West Ham United, linked with a transfer window move for the Liverpudlian.
The combative player was again in the headlines for a challenge on Wigan Athletic's James McArthur on Sunday, for which he was shown a yellow card.
Pardew felt the tackle deserved a booking but nothing more and felt his reputation had as much to do with the coverage than the challenge itself.
"The Press were tough on him again at Wigan I didn't think that tackle was bad at all," Pardew told the Gazette.
"He genuinely went for the ball. He's made mistakes in the past, but of course whenever he does something slightly wrong it's 'bad old Joey' again.
"I don't think he deserves that at the moment. I hope he sticks to his path.
"He's been very level-headed in the dressing room, and on the pitch. At Spurs he got a bit angry, he didn't do anything wrong, but he knows that he walks a line between success and failure and it's a thin line but when he gets it right, he's the reason we win games.
Barton who has been teetotal since committing an assault which saw him jailed in 2008 was abused by Tottenham Hotspur fans every time he touched the ball in last week's defeat at White Hart Lane.
And Pardew went on: "He's kept a cool head, and he continues to, like at Spurs.
"He could have easily boiled over, but he didn't. He had enough of it.
"Every set play he was running over to take it, and you don't have to be a football person to know that some of the abuse he's taking when taking a corner is disgusting.
"You shouldn't have to put up with that as a human being, but nothing gets said about that.
"Joey just gets on with it, and delivers another set play spot on."
Pardew might have been at St James's Park for less than a month, but Barton, hugely influential on the right side of midfield, is already one of the first names on his team-sheet.
And Pardew doesn't think there are too many better midfielders in the country than the 28-year-old, capped once by England.
"I just think Joey's been a revelation this year," added Pardew. "What I've found in the four games we've had is that he's in the top three performances in the team.
"At Wigan, he was the best player I thought, although Cheik (Tiote) ran him close. Whoever the offensive player will be, will not impact on Joey.
"He'll be in the team. Whether it's right-back, left-back or centre-half he'll be in the team. He can play anywhere."
