    Smashing to read that, many thanks for posting it.
    On a personal note -
    My grandparents next door neighbours lad was one of the soldiers massacred during operation Bulbasket.
    They were from Choppington in Northumberland and were staunch Sunderland supporters (as were a lot of the families round there) having moved there, along with my grandparents from Beamish in the 1930's.
    I'd paid no heed really until recently but have made a promise to myself to go and visit his resting place.
    He was an only child and my recollections of his mam and dad were of a couple who showed extra ordinary kindness to the kids round and about.
