    Default Education, education, education?

According to the OECD we are now behind Poland, the Slovak republic and Estonia and a fifth of our 15 year olds are functionally illiterate.

    The wasted Labour years

    Fox News, Daily Fail.
Are you trying to be ignorant on purpose or are you for real?

    OECD tosspot.

I bet if you look it will be in that bastion of impartiality; the fabled gruniad.

Not going to argue your point but I think it's indicative of a deeper malaise than the Labour years.

I've just looked at the chart on page 8 of that PDF. Shanghai came top which seems absolutely bizarre to me. Page 8 suggests that "students tend to perform well regardless of their own background or the school they attend." I would be stunned if they had included the hundreds of schools in the city for the children of migrant workers.

Also it's probably worth pointing out that, while the UK may be a little way down the list, there is an extremely tiny difference between most of the countries above.

Does the daily mail ever publish anything positive?

Actually the uk has one of the best performers in primary aged schooling but it really does decline once they get into their teens.

County Durham has a below Uk average which is something we are trying to address. Well, before the budget cuts anyway.

    I'll say it again...

Any education system will fail if kids aren't educated at home. We can't rely on schools as the sole source of education, in fact it's doomed to fail if we do.

I'm in favour of a modern form of workhouse.

Nail on the head there like, parents do need to educate also.

I think if we can just get more young people to read books would probably solve the problem. Its too easy to just watch a film though.
