    Default Car Techies

The car (petrol Focus) has started to make a high pitched whirring noise and a couple of times there has been a smell like an electric motor burning. The noise is linked to the speed of the engine and doesn't at the moment seem to be affecting performance but there's obviously something not right.
Any ideas what it could be?

Does it smell like your clutch?

how do i describe a clutch burning????

its a strong sweet and sickly smell, it will be obvious. not like a normal burning.

you say it gets worse as you get faster

Done a bit more googling and took it out for another drive and reckon it's the power steering fluid is low causing the pump to whine. It's too dark to check it out properly at the moment I'll give it a proper look in the morning.
If it is that is it safe to drive forty odd miles before sorting it out?

if its low it must have a leak, and you wouldnt get a burning smell. Be better off calling into a garage and getting some fluid and topping it up, it could fuck the pump, and that would cost more than a bottle of psf.
