Default Sunderland in the Anglo-Italian Cup

It was before my time so I don't know too much about it.

Did we play in it regularly?
Did we ever get far in it?
Which Italian sides did we play, both in Italy and at Roker?
Was it thought of as a Mickey Mouse competition at the time?

Cheers in advance for the info.

Did we not have to qualify first to get a chance to play against Italians? (if this is the tournament from the early 90s?) Went to see us play in some tinpot game in midweek at Cambridge in the Don Goodman era and I think that was the A-I Cup...or a meringue...we lost of course

It was resurrected in the early 90s for some bizarre reason.

We first played in it in the early 70s.

In 69/70 we played in a group of 4 games, which were home and away vs Lazio and Fiorentina.

Beat Lazio 3-1 at home with Kerr (2) and Tueart scoring. The attendance was just under 4 thousand.
Drew 2-2 against Fiorentina at home with McGivern and Park scoring.
Lost both away games, 2-1 at Lazio (Tones) and 3-0 at Fiorentina.

In 71/72, another group of 4 games.

Lost 3-2 at Atalanta, Kerr and Lathan.
Won 3-1 in Cagliari, Kerr, Lathan and Tueart.
Drew 0-0 at home to Atalanta.
Drew 3-3 at home to Cagliari, McGivern, Watson and Tueart.

That was probably before I was old enough to go (my first game wasn't until about 76) so I don't remember that. I seem to recall an Anglo-Scottish cup too?

In the 90s version I think the idea was that there was a tournament in England and one in Italy and the winners would play each other or those in the latter stages played each other? Don't recall us getting far enough to play any Italian teams.

Aye, in 93/94, we played two games, vs Tranmere (won 2-0) and Bolton (lost 2-0).

Anglo-Scottish was in 78/79, played vs Bolton (won 2-0), Oldham (lost 2-1) and Burnley (lost 2-1).

I think that's enough facts and figures from me like.

a mini-group that you had to top to take on the Italians. Don't know about Mickey Mouse, but certainly it was second tiers involved so it was not a first rate comp.

    :
A lot more years than that certainly 74/75/76. Remember Carlisle in '75.

Just looked on Statcat and we apparently didn't lose the Cambridge game - September 92/93 season we drew 1-1 at Cambridge and lost 0-1 at home to Birmingham

I took all the results from 'The History of Sunderland AFC' by Bob Graham, so I assume they are correct. No mention of other seasons in the Scottish or Italian cups other than the ones I posted.

Actually, I just noticed those two at the bottom of a page. The others are right though, no mention of us playing Carlisle in anything other than the FA Cup or League.
