The American Revolution: What if it never happened?

For the purposes of argument, had Britain held onto the 13 colonies and then developed the rest of the country, what would America be like today?

Also what would have happened to the Empire? Our defeat in the US concentrated our efforts in Asia, so would one of our rivals taken our place?

Was the revolution a good thing or bad thing for the British?
