STEVE BRUCE wants to land England striker Bobby Zamora.

Sunderland boss Bruce needs a replacement for Kenwyne Jones, who joined Stoke last week for £8million.

He has toyed with moves for Peter Crouch, Craig Bellamy and Ghana's World Cup star Asamoah Gyan but all three deals have stumbled so far.

He has also tracked Loic Remy, the Nice striker who flew into England for talks with Stoke last week and who made his debut for France in midweek.

But Zamora's strength would be the ideal foil for Darren Bent and he has the Premier League experience to make an immediate impact at the Stadium of Light.

The 29-year-old has only two years left on his deal at Craven Cottage and a move north would potentially double his current salary.

He has emerged as the main target man in the country following the international retirement of Emile Heskey.

Sunderland have the funds after selling Jones and last season's captain Lorik Cana.

But they would face the now age-old problem of tempting a player from the South to the North East.

However the success of Bent, who went from London to the Stadium of Light last summer, would strengthen their position.

WIGAN star Charles N'Zogbia looks set to join Sunderland.

The French winger, 24, missed Saturday's Blackpool defeat after demanding a transfer and storming out of a training session.

Black Cats boss Steve Bruce will need to pay around £8m to land a long-standing target who is also wanted by Birmingham.

Bruce took the 23-year-old to Wigan from Newcastle and resurrected his career in the process, with N'Zogbia even making his international debut for France in midweek.

The Wearsiders are desperately trying to add a couple of big-names before the window shuts.

He's 23 and 24.

I like Reid he's a real catalyst on his day but would be glad to see Nzogbia in.

He would probs be 3rd fiddle for the left wing slot if N'Zogbia came in and is already a long way down the pecking order for a central midfield spot. Don't want him to go the barcodes mind, he's a good player and would strengthen them.

Sounds like yet another improvement in the squad - hope it's true.

Whatever about today's disappointment, the long-term view is rosy. SB has made sensible improvements all round. I'd still like to see an experienced keeper on loan though.
