Re: Worst World Cup Ever ...
It's been fairly mundane for the most part, although I have still enjoyed it.
I think the effect the standard of the ball has had cannot be underestimated, players cannot control or judge it as well as they can a regular football, they mistrust it so that's restricted a lot of attacking play - they're unwilling in the main to shoot from distance or whip balls in as they can't be certain where it's going to go. Why the hell they'd sanction the use of such a vastly different football is beyond me, it seems absolutely ridiculous.
Another thing I think has had a noticeable effect is as a consequence of the majority of teams being made up of European based players. This has resulted in the most teams playing a similar style of play, being too wary of conceding - even the Spanish, while playing 'attractive' football have been quite negative. Gone are the days of players primarily playing in their home countries (bar England, ironically enough), and this has led to a lack of difference in playing styles.
There was only Japan who IMO were exciting and interesting to watch, and that IMO is because they had a individual way of playing.
