Would be amazing. And although it isn't impossible, the amount of work and money that would be needed to go into makes it highly unlikely.

Port of Tyne has grown too big for Sunderland to be considered worth investing in. They've been spending money like it's going out of fashion to improve the facilities there.

    This was recently announced:

    Quote:
The Port of Tyne is pleased to announce that Unifeeder, one of Northern Europe's largest feeder networks, have established a new weekly service to the Tyne.

On the 18th of June the first Unifeeder vessel, Veersedijk, arrived at the Port of Tyne, establishing a direct import call from Felixstowe.

Unifeeder's new UK service operates three container ships on regular routes between the ports of Felixstowe, Grangemouth, Immingham, Teesport and South Shields and the continental hubs of Hamburg and Rotterdam.

In theory it'd be possible, the new radial route would be the answer to some of the infrastructure. Plus the masses of disused railway line to and from the docks is just wasted at the minute, but all depended on the demand which i suspect would be not sustainable...

The state of the docks is a crying shame, so much potential for development, masses of empty land. The Bartram's site is still just rubble, and the oil storage depot was vacated the last i heard. There were some interesting council plans a few years back outlining redevelopment of the docks with renewable energy stuff but i think they are more preoccupied with chasing fishermen off the piers.
