A184 shut on Friday

SOUTH Tyneside motorists are warned that a major road will be shut tomorrow.
The A184 will be closed in both directions at Whitemare Pool interchange for the ongoing bridge repair works, which have caused traffic misery for many motorists in recent months.

In order to carry out sheet piling works, the road will be fully closed both eastbound and westbound on Friday between 9.30am and 3.30pm, and Monday between 9.30am and 3.30pm.

Further closures will be required to complete this work although these dates are still to be confirmed.

Signs advising drivers of the closures have been put up at the interchange.

Traffic on the A184 will be diverted via the slip roads to the roundabout below for the duration of the closures.

And traffic lights on the roundabout will be turned off during these closures to assist traffic flows.

Highways Agency project manager John Sheerin said: "This work is taking place out of peak hours and on week days in order to minimise the disruption to drivers.

"It would not be possible to carry out this work at night due to the noise which would affect nearby residents."
