About time we had more British players abroad
Is it just me who thinks it is about time some of the British youngsters showed some bloody balls and some ambition and move abroad?
Sorry to once again use Matt Derbyshire as an example but it does actually proove my point.
Here is a lad who was obviously a good goalscorer but was not getting chances as a result of overpaid foreigners like Benni McCarthy keeping him out of the side at Blackburn. He allowed his contract to run out and decided to try better his carear by going abroad. Granted he has only moved to to the Greek league, but as a result he is playing for the top side there and now playing Champions league football. By all accounts he is scoring goals and enhancing his reputation and value.
I am sick of seeing tto many youth or fringe players prepared to sit it out on the benches season after season and not get a chance.
It is only because of Vidic and Ferdinands injury that Jonny Evans was given a chance, and only by moving to Birmingham on loan did Joe Hart get a chance. Joe Hart needs to move from Man City if he is going to realisticly challenge and make the England keepers shirt his own in the next few seasons.
There are many younger players who are only too happy to play lower level league football here, rather than going to try gain experiance abroad.
If a player is playing for Leicester in the Championship and another is doing equally well at Besiktas, Olympiakos or Feyenored, I know who would have a better chance of being picked for their country.

Re: About time we had more British players abroad
aye, ive said the same. If mignolet, a back up keeper for us, could have been first choice at PSV, there must be a fair number of young, english PL bench warmers who could move and actually get a game (and maybe some technical ability) abroad. Trouble is, as seen with Mignolet, the money for a sub here is much better than a first choice in the dutch league. Hence we would need the players to leave their friends/ family, have to learn a new language and accept a fairly hefty pay cut. Not many will do this, which is unfortunate because it would benefit them as players.
The other trouble is that not many foreign clubs could afford (or would want to pay) the fairly ridiculous premium for young, english players.

Thats what i mean, show some balls and ambition and not greed and comfort....lower your wage demands for a sacrifise of experiance abroad. Ben Foster is another who needs to move and play regularly and could do well abroad.

They sit on the bench but would probably get x5 times the money instead of playing regular football for Besiktas, Feyenoord or Olympiakos. Coupled with the fact that young, English footballers are criminally overpriced - eg: if James Milner is worth £30M I'm a Chinaman.

Re: About time we had more British players abroad
Would be interesting to see how often this is actually on the cards and whether these pay cuts spoken of are really that bad. Didn't pennant earn much more in la liga?
I fear that foreign coaches are simply concerned with the technical ability that English players lack in.

la liga is well paid, but not many young english lads would be likely to be snapped up by spanish sides. I am thinking more of them going to the dutch/ french leagues tbh- and certainly they will be paid substantially smaller sums there, as seen by mignolet when there was an offer from us and PSV

If a player is likely to get a lot more money by signing to be a back up for a mid table PL side than they would get as a first choice at a dutch top side, it would suggest that the financial differences between the leagues are pretty huge

Aye fair enough, plus I bet dutch premier league players don't get to go on come dine with me and four weddings and that, like English second and third division players.

Re: About time we had more British players abroad
Micheal Ball tried it at PSV and it did nt quite work out for him, but even players going to play at Celtic and Rangers to get Champions league experiance would surely be beneficial to their careers?
