    Default Infra Red... anyone tried?

A bit of a cliche perhaps but I think it's my best effort so far

It was taken on a D70 with an infrared filter on the lens.
You cant see through it so you have to compose the shot first and then put on the filter and bracket LOTS. The colour varies quite a lot with the exposure and the results can be almost impossible to see well on the camera screen, I usually convert them to B&W or sepia on Photoshop.
Just to make it a bit more difficult I think the point of focus is somehow slightly different for IR so small apertures may be best. I'm just finding out by trial and error and t'internet.

Many camera lenses (prob not these days) have an 'r' setting on the focus ring which is for IR photography. Just shy of the infinity mark.

Why? Let me know when you find out. For some reason I can't fathom the focus is different

Not quite right, a bit wishywashy, you will get better like this.

Lovely gardens. Does it say where they are?

I found this but it's only confused me more....

I think the small aperture for max depth of field is probably the way to go.

Also says that the camera will filter out any IR light before it reaches the sensor... in which case, if I add a filter to keep out all but IR light, how do I get any image at all?

Not bad at all Snockerty, how long was the exposure?

I'd expect it to be fairly long as DSLRs pass very little IR on account of the IR-blocker filter. I reckon that garden shot was done with a modified camera.

I think it's because the IR blocker isn't 100% efficient. I'll see if I can lay my hands on a transmission graph.

If you were serious about this lark, you could get a cheap obsolete model off fleabay (eg Canon EOS10D) and get the filter ripped out.

PS, this was shot with a 742nm IR-pass filter and Imaging Source webcam, if that counts.
