Did anybody on here used to get in The Red Lion, along "The Avenue" & partake in Billy Button's (R.I.P Billy) pre match quiz ? (I used to love the way he referred to Newcastle and Boro, as "The Scum & The other Scum" when asking questions about said, twats )
And was anybody ever scammed by Sammy "The Chin, aka "King of The Fulwell" Smith's football cards . . . and more importantly, did anybody ever win one of his cards ?
He actually once told me and my mates who used to get in there each matchday, that it was our turn to win the card, before he took it round the pub, and lo & behold - we won !

Re: Thread For The Over 40's Only
First promotion season in 63/64 had everything including a decent cup run. The games against Everton and Man Utd have been done to death.
1966/67 we did the double over the Mags, 3-0 both times. Another canny cup run ended by Leeds, a cameo first dozen games or so from Bobby Kerr before Hunter "did" him at Roker in the cup match.
The atmosphere at Roker in those days of gates of 50,000 was brilliant. Going to away games though used to be very scary. On the tube to West Ham if you got caught between stations you'd had it.
Man Utd away in '68 when we won 2-1 was one of the best days supporting the lads I've had. At Anfield that season we lost 2-1 but the Liverpool fans were hilarious.
In 68/69 the warning signs were there, McColl had gone after a demo at Roker after we lost to Norwich in the cup (anybody still got their Norwich scarf?) and Alan Brown came back. He then proceeded to take us down for the second time in 1970.

Re: Thread For The Over 40's Only
When my dad used to take me in the fulwell as a young'un in the 70's, he used to leave me at the front an go and meet my uncle further back. I can still remember thinking how the hell can you find someone in that crowd.
Its been said before, but the peanut sellers. Throwing arms that would get them into the England cricket squad, and the money that was passed down always reached him.
Sadly, wouldn't happen these days.

Righty O - This owld fucker is away now, and will be returning in the New Year, hopefully having recalled some more tales of past home games and awaydays, and the characters that made those past times so legendary among us "owldies".
Very Best Wishes to you all, for a cracking 2009

Good one. I'm pissed and I have a poor memory at the the best of times but I'm trying to recall an away FA cup tie (evening KO) at some place like Burnley in the '70's. Freezing cold it was. I need Nils Desperandum to help me out here. Or Scary Nuns.
Anyway the long and short of it was that we all got slaughtered in a pub afterwards. We pulled off the Motorway on the way yem for the munchies and the driver decided to re-enter the Motorway via the exit lane! Cue the Polis, breathlyser and a night in the cells. I hitched home and somehow made it to work on time. What a night.
