A mate of mine just got her PHD in economics the other day. She's 31, has 3 bairns and hasn't worked a day in her life.

    Well done Dr. Rowe!

I presume she had to graft to get her Phd and raise three kids.

Sounds like she has things pretty well sorted out. If I had had a better understanding of economics years ago I suspect I would have been in a position to make better decisions about what I wanted to do.

"3 bairns and hasn't worked a day in her life" - hmmmm....

I think the PhD work (knowing full well how hard that is) will still be a rest sometimes from looking after the kids.

Us PhD students don't do any work you know. Fancy coming and doing it? Nah didn't think so.

It's a long time since for me now, but I won't miss the 12 to 16 hour days and constant red pen through drafts (actually more red pen than visible typing on the page) over the two years it took to write the f*cking thing up (after two years of literature review and research - the research bit was good mind). PhDs are not an excuse to stay on a student jolly for a few more years that many perceive them to be (though there are alcohol induced moments).
