    Default Laptop Memory Advice

I have 2 slots for memory each with a 512 mb chip. I want to have 2 gb in total. the 2gb and 1gb chip are just about the same price. Do I buy one 2gb chip and could I leave one of the 512mb chip in the other slot.

Depends on what your laptop will take.

Run the scanner & memory adviser here - http://www.crucial.com/#

That will tell you what it is capable of & the ram that will be suitable. You can then either buy their recommendation or have a shop around to see if you can get it cheaper elsewhere.

There should be the same size, and ideally brand, in each slot.

There might be a slight performance advantage to 2 X 1GB (dual channel mode then kicks in) but, if it were me, I'd go 1 x 2GB because you can then add another 2GB when you eventually decide you want 4GB.
