Sunderland Legends XI
The word legend gets thrown about willy-nilly these days, what constitutes being a legend???
Being obly 20, I only started supporting the lads in 1995 so tin hat on as I don't have a memory which preceded my life. Here is my crack at a legend XI-
GK- Jimmy Montgomery
LB- Len Ashurst
CB- Charlie "The King" Hurley
CB- Gary Bennett
RB- Stan Anderson
MF- Bobby Kerr
MF- Ian Porterfield
MF- Gordon Armstrong
ST- Kevin Phillips
ST- Raich Carter
ST- Bobby Gurney

Re: Sunderland Legends XI
Colin Todd, Joe Bolton, Dave Watson, Gary Rowell, Brian Clough, Len Shackleton, John Kay to add a few - not all for the same reasons!

Re: Sunderland Legends XI
There should be a 'SAFC Hall of Fame' including the strongest XI imo. Someone else can be inducted every 2 years or so.
I would maybe swap Shackleton for Armstrong in your team like.

but could you put Brian Clough and Gary Rowell ahead of the 3 forwards mentioned??
I love Lord Rowell, but he was outscored by SuperKev and he isn't as good as Carter and Gurney (alledgedly, I wasn't born then)
And Clough maybe if he didn't get injured, he only played 64 games for us so hardly legendary status

He scored 54 goals in 61 league games for us.
Is that not enough?

Its an excellent idea and one that I'd thought of before. You should write to the club suggesting it.

I never saw Carter & Gurney so it is difficult to comment but it isn't about how good they were or who was better. Its about legendary status (hence John Kay and to a lesser extent Joe Bolton). Rowell was not an out and out striker either so its wrong to compare them as they were not like for like. Clough without doubt is a legend - he is one of a few footballers to play for Sunderland who supporters remember the date, match details and offending opposition player when he was put out the game.
I am not saying that Carter and Gurney shouldn't be in the team. I prefer to pick a squad

I think I will. It could be very popular if it happened.
