Xbox 360 dead, out of warranty as well
I can pay £80 for MS to fix it, or I can just buy an Elite.
I'm going for the Elite option, but I was wondering if anyone has had any success with the towel trick? Maybe getting the console working long enough for a trade-in of some sorts?

They extend the warranty from 1 year to 3 if it's red lighted, mine isn't covered.

i can fix the red lights like. done loads. it's only a temp fix though which usually lasts for around 8 months to a year. but if u only use for a couple of hours at a time then let it cool down they are usually fine. u can get the kits on ebay with instructions on how to fix. the towel trick will not work for long i am afraid

Take it to Cheap as Chips at the bottom of Hylton Road, he'll repair it for less than MS I'm guessing.

I suppose the benefit of sending it back to MS is that they've been known to replace the whole motherboard and dodgy components, whereas anywhere else will just be fixing the knackered bits already in there.
But then given the age of it I'm severly tempted to just replace it with an Elite, build using newer parts, a bigger HD and coming with a HDMI output.

Mine was way out of warranty and they replaced mine, have you tried registering a repair?

Yeah it's asking for CC details and says I'll be charged 80 notes.

Towel trick worked for about 6 months on mine and then it just red ringed constantly. I decided to piss about inside replacing the gunk and stuff it was just fucked (the old gunk was proper cheap shite, it was like chewing gum when I tried to remove it )
I bought a brand new pre flashed Jasper 360 (with no accessories) for £110 off the net, if you want the link pm me. He also does the Elites but I dont see what all the fuss about Elites are tbh. They also do repairs for red rings and stuff, though if you have the bottle you can try it yourself (brother had no luck doing it himself with a kit and it kept overheating still every other month till it died).
