Just put this on SS2, talking about TV deals pre sky at the moment.

Repeats on SS1 early in the morning for those with Sky plus and interested

Think is gist is talking about the breakaway and the formation of the PL

David Dien sayings Arsenal's turnover was £1.5 million a year in 1988

    How times have changed eh

    I might be completely wrong...

But i seem to remember that Sunderland were against the breakaway from the Football League.

Whether it was a good move or not can be debated really... but Sky's money would have been introduced into football somehow, even if it was shared more equally with all the league teams rather than mainly the PL.

SKY were nigh on bankrupt when the PL started and the money they put in comes from armchair football fans, and as far as I know SKY make a profit?

SKY are not some kind of sugar daddy who props up the Premier League out of the good of its heart. They are in fact the biggest beneficiaries of the boom years and effectively take money 'out' of the game. They did not build all the new stadia. The fans TV subscriptions did.

Sunderland were indeed against the break away and rightly so in my view. Prior to this, I still thought SAFC could win the league given a fair wind, a good manager and a bit of luck, after all the likes of Derby, Forest, Villa, Leeds and Man City had done it in recent memory. The likes of Watford and QPR had gone very close. Now I know I will never see my team win the top prize.

Please stop buying into their hype which credits them with everything that is supposedly good (and its usually the same things that many fans hate) about modern football.

Sky cleared a BILLION profit last year.

As far as our club is concerned never say never.
    Things do change over time.
Look what happened to the invincible Leeds.

    seen this.

all about chasing the dirty dollar.

'the night football decided to take the working mans game from the working man and then sold it back to him at a premium' doesnt have the same ring to it.

    wankers.

Possibly a daft question, but is it live sports coverage where Sky has made most of its money over the years?

I only ask because I remember in the early days of Sky (well, around 1993), out of all the people we knew who had Sky, we were the only ones to have the sport channels. Everyone else just had the likes of Sky 1, Nickelodeon and the two/three film channels. I'd be surprised if football fans' TV money was making a huge difference to Sky's bottom line in those early days.

Maybe we just knew a load of scroungers, though.

Interesting programme. Seemed to be saying that the "big 5" at the time were hell bent on breaking away and The Premier League was a better option than some at the time. From Sky's point of view of course.

What do I miss the most from pre Sky days.

Saturday 3-o-clock kick-offs every home game.

Everyone had a set routine every Saturday.

Away Games this included Ceefax for score updates.
