It was interesting when Roy was asked about speaking with terry and ferdinand about playing together... he said something that i picked up as I pick the team.. When he was asked the same question regarding Gerrard playing, he responded the same. Gerrard was reportedly one of the senior players who stabbed roy in the back at anfield with King Kenny (theres a laugh)
I think a few players England careers ended with Roys appointment.
its to early to say IF he will pick players on merit. Having said Rooney was going to the euros it would appear not though he might be just the exception..Interesting times ahead.
I think he will do a good job.

Rooney's scored 26 league goals this year for Manchester United, of course he's being picked on merit. He's suspended the first two games, but he's one of England's few (if not England's only) world class players, it would be insane not to take him.

From the Guardian
The FA chairman, David Bernstein, admitted the body could have made "easier appointments", implying a move for Redknapp at Tottenham Hotspur, and conceded the four-man Club England board "stand and fall together" on the decision taken. Bernstein pointed to Hodgson's experience at international level, where he has coached Switzerland, Finland and United Arab Emirates, and there was public support, too, from the new manager's captain at Liverpool. "Roy's a good man and a good manager," said Steven Gerrard, a candidate to regain the armband with England. "It's important he's given a chance and I'm looking forward to working with him again."

Agree but we must resist temptation to build the team around him. His competition record is completely shite and he has form of being a dick when they come around.

He's not the only one in an England shirt you can say that about. He's the best player though, so you're going to end up tailoring the team to fit him to a certain extent, you'd be mad not to.

Why wouldn't you build the team around the best player? Surely it would benefit Rooney, in the same way we're getting the best out of Sessegnon now the side is built around him, and then perhaps we'd see less of his poorer international performances.

Harsh. He was one of the players of the tournament before he got injured in Euro 2004 and he was still using oxygen tents to speed up recovery a week before the 2006 World Cup.
Granted, he didn't turn up at South Africa - but who did?

I read that as : 'Steven Gerrard spent most of yesterday frantically back-pedalling after realising his criticism of Hodgson may come back to bite him on the arse. Said Gerrard "Errrr, soz like Roy, I was only jokin' y'know. Bezzie mates la?" '
