Re: Manfrotto 290 Series Tripods
Pretty flimsy
I would go for the 055 series if they are still current. But they cost more of course...

I looked at repairing a set of 055 legs last week. Was gonna cost at least £70 for the 6 leg brackets. What's the point in that?
I might just superglue them up
Legs only, £96 here
I've bought from these before

Why buy summat you're gonna be slightly unhappy with though? False economy in many cases

just spent £296 on a 28-75 Tamron & £40 on a c-polariser.. our lass would kill me if I spent over a tonne on what she thinks is some bits of metal
That said, going to take your advice and buy the better stand, just when I get paid next.

Good stuff.
Heads are over rated, never use one myself

Re: Manfrotto 290 Series Tripods
I have the tripod legs that are in the Ebay link, and although they are not the lightest, mine have been stood in lakes, the sea, sand and mud quite a bit over the last few years and they are still working perfectly. The extra weight adds to stability and I have had no real problems with the wind as of yet, unlike when I had a lighter, cheaper tripod.
A quick squirt of WD40 after being in water keeps them in good condition.

Re: Manfrotto 290 Series Tripods
I have one of the 190 series (I know its not what you asked) and it's a brilliant piece of kit. I take it everywhere when I travel and it has survived in airplane holds on several long haul flights with changeovers (I can think of no better recommendation tbh!).
Prior to the Manfrotto I had gone through 2 other tripods both of which were supposed to be decent.

Or don't bother like me, and they still last 4-5years before seizing up. Not bad at all given my usage
The legs brackets go eventually
Avoid manfrotto neotec.

190 are smaller than 055, but might suit the OP actually. Sturdier than 290
