    Question Car Mechanic question

My car keeps on loosing power. 10 mph max speed. If I pull over and switch the engine off for a few minutes, the car will run fine again. Then the problem will return, at no specific time or mileage. Could run fine for an hour, or it could return after only 5 minutes.

    Its a turbo diesel engine.

Seems to be an engine management problem, no faults flashing up on the computer however.

    Any good advice please.

Probably DPF related. Burn it up the A1 for 30 miles.

Diesel particulate filter you need to give it a good blast to clear it.

the thing with turbo diesel cars is you need to give them a good thrashing every now & again. becuase if you only do say drive about town at 30 mph or so the fume particals are not hot enough to burn then they stick to the dpf filter and block it . usally a garage will set a portable computer up in the car and drive it for about 20mins at about 50 mph ,the computer puts the engine in a mode so that it clears the dpf filter.if that is the problem it could be something else best thing is take it to a garage where they will use their software to pinpoint the prob.

Has it lost power or is the engine loose. Difference in the amount of "o's"

DPF's regenerate every so often to burn the particulate matter that they filter from the exhaust gas. to regenerate they (usually) burn off the particulates with a combination of fuel and high temp exhaust gas. you need high engine speeds to get the gas at a higher temp hence a blast on the A1 suggestion.

On the other hand, these regens convert the PM into ash, and a DPF has a maximum ash capacity. hence it may need a clean from time to time (not a big deal).

DPF's are a relatively new technology and are generally a fucking nightmare like.

Could be various other things though -at a guess maybe a fuel pump. You need to go to a dealer marra.

    Good luck!

    I'd suggest a diagnostic check.

If you're local I can suggest a couple of decent, honest independents.
