Got a mates computer here which turns itself off.

Booted 2nd time to desktop, 77 processes on xp using task manager (thats not right) and before i get a chance to try something it shuts down!!

Now he took it to his local pc shop and he said its the motherboard..ive just proved that its not havent i?

I reckon its infected but have considered that maybe some hardware is fucked and Pc is shutting itself down to protect itself i.e. the processor

    Any ideas lads?

And no I can't format the fucker before you say

Has he got any antivirus software installed on it?

Does it say anything before it shuts down?

Says nowt, just shuts down immediately. Tried booting in safe mode and it didn't even make it to the desktop last time.

I've never known anything like it in 10 years but, thats cause my systems i build are of quality, this is an Intel socket 478 1.7ghz ffs

Mcaffee and also some "speed up your pc" shite thats starts immediately. System idle process was using CPU from 35 to 95%

Sounds like a virus to you? I still haven't discounted hardware failure but it was working up until last Thursday apparently.

Does sound like a virus to me. I definitely would try a different anti virus that's up to date, and maybe the only solution would be to format the fucker.

I'd just wipe it. Sounds like it's too far gone to try removing virus's etc.

Get inside the case. Check for and clear out any dust around the CPU fan, then boot the machine with the lid off and check the fan is spinning properly. It doesn't take long to overheat a CPU, often just long enough to boot, or sometimes not...

Check that first before thinking about anything like an infection.
