    Default PC question

My kids share a desktop pc between them. It is about 2 years old and started to make a lot of noise. Mainly whirring but also a lot of rattling.

Do I just need to replace the fan or will the hard drive need changing as well? And do these componants simply pull out and plug in?

Aye if it's the fan just pull it out (they are just clipped on) and replace it. You might need some thermal paste to put on the new one if it doesn't have some already on (most do now tho). No need to touch the harddrive or owt (unless it's that making the noise!).

They just clip on and off. Make sure it's the fan on the CPU whiring mind, it might be the fan on your graphics card (mine at work has this problem).

Might just need a good clean.
Buy some of that compressed air and blast all the dust out, take it outside to do it though cos it maks a reet mess.

You could try clearing the case fans with a hoover first, if that doesnt sort it, take the back/side off and use the hoover on the processor fan, also have a look for trailing wires that may be catching in the blades.

Edit - if it starts up and runs ok its unlikely to be he hard drive.

CPU Fan is unlikely to be the cause.

Clean it out first, then switch it on with the case off - you'll be able to find where the noise is coming from.

In order of likelihood (based on sources of noise annoyance in my own systems over the years):

    1) cheap shite case fans

    2) cheap shite chipset fans

    3) cheap shite PSU fans

    4) cheap shite hard drives

    5) cheap shite CPU fans

    Niall Quinn despises those fans.
