    Default Stretching

On the rare occasions I get off my arse and go for a run, my calves get very tight. This is especially noticeable on the right calf. I try and stretch them and even put some deep heat on it on Saturday. This seemed to improve it but is there something more effective I could do?

Dont stretch cold muscles though, warm up first. Then best stretching is done after the run.

Don't want to sound stupid but I thought stretching was warming up. What should I be doing before I leave the house?

A bit of light, slow running for 5 minutes, then stretch.

The aussie institute of sport has some good stuff and they do a lot of research.

I did read a report that said stretching before an activity was pretty much pointless.

Never stretch before warming up. Think of your muscles as plasticine. If you start pulling at it when it's cold it will just break up. If you roll it around in a ball for a while until it heats up, it will be nice and flexible.
