Default Wigan's three at the back last night

Why the hell did Martinez play that formation?

His defenders are poor, yet plays with less. Surely you'd put more at the back to make up for the defensive frailties?

I like Martinez, but I think he got it wrong last night.

to be fair i think martinez had the right idea, he set up for his side to attack and they did attack well and in numbers around the box, this will always open you up to the counter attack which we used well while our defence was solid.
against a different team they would most likely have had a lot more success.

Maybe because Caldwell is out and just maybe getting to the point where he thinks need to win games and not draw / not lose, don't think defending is their strong point tbf.

You're not wrong, which makes it even more baffling why they would only play three at the back. Maybe it is because they get the ball and play some nice football in the oppositions half, but as long as teams defend well they will find it easy to catch Wigan on the counter.

I think they've been using that formation for a few games (with a degree of success). It does leave them open to a thumping now and again though.

You're right about their defending - if we'd conceded the second and third, this board would have been full of people wanting to see Jones and Figueroa put in a wicker man and burned, Edward Woodward style.

Last night Wigan were reminiscent of us under Bruce this season, play nearly everyone in midfield so you have lots of possession and successful passes stats.

Then defend like little girls and get a punch to the gonads.
