Wink Can anyone remember what it was like without the new A19?

    I can

Getting to Sunland wasnt to bad along the cost road into Seaham, Grangetown and Park Lane but trying to get to the Boro was a total nightmare and would takes ages.

I lived right on the old A19 and watch them build the new one

I can remember before they built the flyover on the A19 at the moorcock... and that was bad enough.

    When was the A19 built?

There's a good breakdown of its history on wikipedia but sadly can't view it today. There used to be a good pub called the Red Lion near Billingham on the A19 not sure what happened to it.

    1966 I think, or maybe 1965.

The old road came into Peterlee via Old Shotton past the Black Bull and George, going out of Peterlee it went past Castle Eden Brewery and the Castle Eden Inn.

I think is basically followed an old coaching route from Sunland to Stockton

I remember as a kid, when we first moved down south and used to go home for holidays used to take eight hours to get back. Noww can do it in three and a half on a good run, wouldn't have dreamt of doing the match in a day then. Seems nothing nowadays. A19 and many other roads made all the difference.

Wouldnt fancy the old Hartlepool to Gatesheeed commute each day back then.

The A19 must be one of the best flowing roads in the country mind, generally foot to the floor bar the odd half hour here n there.

I worked in Washington and it took lads who lived about 8 miles to the north longer to get there than my 28 miles.
