    Default BSB...Squarial

just moved into a new place (well, new to me, but an old house)

theyve got one of those BSB Squarial things on the wall, always wanted BSB when I was a kid....think it was cos the dish looked a lot better than the old 60cm dishes...

Is it likely theres anything still broadcasting from that Satellite? Am assuming its old analogue technology, but i know theres still a couple of old analogue channels broadcasting on Astra....probably soft porn on sunday nights and TV shows like Tutti Frutti (anyone round about mid-30's is bound to have 'stumbled' across channels like RTL and DSF etc on Sunday nights)

It doesnt point at astra, it points 1deg west of south to a satellite family called Thor. This was sold to the Scandinavians when BSB was bought out by Sky. its footprint was narrowed meaning the squarials were not big enough to continue receiving the signal. However a 50cm offset dish will get Thor. The BSB system also worked in Mpeg2 and as Thor now broadcasts in digital only.

Or in other words: Its Useless.

Aaah, Tutti Frutti! That German presenter always had eyes that looked like piss-holes in the snow as a result from over-shagging all the totty

I had BSB when it first came out and If I remember rightly the satellites it was broadcasted on was called Marco Polo 1 & 2 which I think are now defunct - although the equipment could still be used to pick up Dmac signals from other sources.

Aye, I knew it didnt point at Astra, but Marco Polo, but thought that if there were still the odd channels in Analogue on Astra, there might be summit still on Marco Polo, but it seems not....

I think it used D2Mac as its broadcast frequency, I remember seeing the demo of it in Rumbelows or Radio Rentals, it had On Screen Programme info...way ahead of Sky at the time

    its an easy mistake clearly

might just keep the dish up as a reminder of another failed technology, to join the ranks of HD-DVD, Betamax, DAT, V2000, and MiniDisc
