    Just read on Sky news that Ian Lawther has passed away aged 71. R.I.P.

    I remember seeing him score the equalizer against top division Blackburn in the cup (they got to the final that year. We sold him to Blackburn and, if I remember correctly, bought Brian Clough to replace him

    Default RIP Ian Lawther

    I have just heard that Ian Lawther, centre forward for Sunderland in the 1960-61 season, has died. He scored 24 goals in that season before being replaced by Brian Clough. RIP.

    He had a good record here, scored around 18 goals in 1959-60 and 24 in 1960-61.

    You are perfectly right my friend. Lawther was never going to be the goalscorer that Clough was but a very decent centre forward nevertheless.
