    Default Paying fines in hotels

Lad at work is in a Brass Band and was playing at the Big Meet in Durham at the weekend. This lad doesn't drink and is very quiet and I doubt his bandmates are exactly party animals.
He claims they were fined by the hotel for 'being rowdy'. The explanation being that they would have to pay compensation to the other guests.
I think they've been done by the hotel, is this common practice?

No - but he deserves the fine for playing in a brass band
