Default Labours Strategy (according to C4 News)

    C4 News:
A counter offer is still being brewed. Gordon Brown is under some pressure from people in his own party wanting him to quit as Labour leader so they can start putting an alternative bid to the Lib Dems before Nick Clegg signs on the dotted line with David Cameron. The process this would involve is so convoluted as to make it almost certainly impossible - but the theory goes that Gordon Brown resigns as Labour leader but not as prime minister, while Harriet Harman as caretaker leader negotiates with Nick Clegg. This would be on the basis that David Miliband will stand unopposed by any serious candidate as new Labour leader, so that the Lib Dems know exactly who they would go into government with eventually.

Once the deal is done Gordon Brown goes to the palace and advises the Queen that the caretaker Harriet Harman can form a government with the Lib Dems, then once Labour has its new leader in place she goes to the palace and advises the Queen that Miliband will be taking over as prime minister. As I write this it sounds either so mad as to be unworkable, or so intricately thought through as to be plausible. It also requires Ed Balls and Ed Miliband to give up their hopes of Labour leadership. It's been reported that Labour's National Executive is to convene on Tuesday. Cathy Newman and Sarah Smith are on the case and Ed Vaizey from the Conservatives will join us live.

I have very few reference points on here nowadays. You're one of them. Most of the political argy-bargy crowd show very little personality, after all...

That and I liked the chance for the pun.

I like it...if only to see Bongo's breakdown when Harriet Harman becomes PM.

    Well I can't deny I'm flattered.
We're like the recent Gordon Brown and Margaret Thatcher thing.

The journos don't seem too chuffed that in reality, they have little or no idea what's going on.

The press campaign against Brown is a disgrace... he is obliged to stop on for now and if the Tories and Liberals join up, then he'll go straight away. End of.

Similarly yesterday, they peddled all the old dross about Brown allegedly "ranting" at Clegg. Then it emerges today that if it happened at all, it was almost certainly a result of Clegg telling him he ought to step down - if I was Brown, I'd have given him the same response. Clegg may just find very soon that he's got enough problems keeping his own people in line without poking his nose into another party's business.
