    Default Charity shield 73/74

Why as cup winners did we not play in the charity shield? Burnley beat man city in 73 & Leeds played Liverpool in 74.

It should have been us and Liverpool but as the tie was not as glamorous as it is now both of us opted out. Man City won it in '72 so they were invited to take our place and Burnley, the division 2 winners were invited to take Liverpool's place.

Also, had a peek at the history and it was only in 1974 that the format was finalised as being top flight winners v FA Cup winners.

That's one 1973 question answered. The other is, why the orange ball? It was only raining!

Also in 1999, if my shit memory serves, Grimsby won a play-off final with a golden goal. Why did the same rule not apply when Nicky Summerbee struck against Charlton?

Golden ball for the 100th anniversary of the Fa cup?

The Mariners went on to dump Burnley out of the Football League Trophy Northern section area final, which would see the club book its first trip to Wembley Stadium. The club were drawn against Southern section champions AFC Bournemouth and in a tight game, an equaliser from substitute Kingsley Black took the game into extra time, and in the 112th minute Grimsby secured the game courtesy of a golden goal from Wayne Burnett

100TH YEAR anniversary was the year before. Leeds won it.

Orange ball because the white ball was the same colour as Leeds Utd socks and Stokoe asked the referee to change the ball
