They're a fuckin disgrace. Only the high-achieving schools can do this so the other poor bassas and their kids will get dragged further down. It's gonna be bad round here. Middle-class ghettos.

I'm all for anything that can improve a child's education so I'm not against it in principal.

That said the whole idea could be a minefield of possible dangers.
It will put further stress on an already stretched OFSTED and it could feasibly open up allegations of brainwashing should the dreaded muslims decide that they wish to opt in on it. What implications it has for the curriculum as well as elitism is something I'll have to ponder as well.

Like I say, not against it in principal but it will have to be carefully managed.

    from Stuart Maconie:

So parents get the right to set up their own schools? Fine. But shall we get this straight once and for all? Of course, those parents who want it should have that right. In fact, they already do. The're called private schools. If you have the land and the cash, you can do it now.

But you should not receive one penny of public money, one red cent of oridnary people's taxes to fund your pet project. Anymore than I should get public funding to start my own fire brigade. Or Childrens cancer unit. Or navy.

Or any other job that should be done by a government worth the name and its properly trained, properly supported, properly paid professionals.

Don't think so. Academies already exist. These are schools opting out of LA control to be run by parents, teachers, etc. but the only ones that can do it are the ones already rated highly by OFSTED. Just can't see the ones left behind ever being able to catch up. Just my opinion like.
