Default Do you have to be English.

To play for England have you got to be born in England or do you qualify to play for England if your great, great, great grandfather got an english woman pregnant? I was watching the Germany v Australia game and a sub called Caucau came on, the commentator said he qualified to play for Germany a year ago, he was born in Brazil. Did he do a Genes Reunited search and found out his mother had a one nighter with a tourist or something? I can see allsorts playing for England in the coming years. At least in 66 we were all English and proud of the fact.

Cacau became a German citizen through playing there for so many years, and hadn't played for Brazil so was open to be picked by Germany. It's the same with Almunia and England, he is elligible to play for England.

I think there would be a massive amount of uproar amongst people if a 'foreigner' was picked for England though.

You can play for your counrty of birth or for any other as far back as your grandparents I think.

The other way is to have played here for so many years but not represented any other country at competitive level.

Anyone of English descent or citizenship can play for England providing they have not played at senior level for any other FIFA country
