Gordon is now fit again but lacks match fitness and Mignolet’s form means boss Steve Bruce sees no reason to change things just yet. Mignolet said: “We will just have to wait and see what happens.

“The manager picks the team and my first job is to make sure I start tonight’s game.

“After that, we just have to wait and see but I am looking forward to it because I want to do my best.

“I want to show I can cope. I feel the whole team is doing well and we can gain another good result.”

Sunderland are hoping Darren Bent recovers from the groin problem he picked up while on England duty last week in time to play.

Bolo Zenden (ankle) and Andy Reid (hamstring) are out, while Kieran Richardson and Anton Ferdinand are major doubts.
