canon 500d/T1i
Hi Lads
I'm looking to buy my first dslr and am looking at the 500d. They are £600 in jessops but the T1i Rebel is £480 on ebay. What's the difference?
Is the T1i the japanese/american version or something? Will i have any issues if I go for that one?

Same camera - just watch out for customs charges if you buy on eBay. Some sellers will mark the package as a gift, which makes it less likely that you'll get caught.
Full review here.

Re: canon 500d/T1i
Cheers mate. The t1i is shipped from Brighton. They are all re-furbisher by Canon. Think they'll be alright? Seller has feedback of over 99% from over 100k items!

If it's a refurb, try and find out what the shutter count is.
Buying a used SLR is a bit like buying a car, only instead of mileage you need to know how many shots the camera has taken. The t1i is 'rated' for 100,000 'actuations' - in other words, once it has taken 100,000 shots it'll be knackered. Obviously, if it has taken 80,000 shots then it'll be on its way out.
It'll probably be fine, and my hunch is that they'll have refurbed all the bits that suffer wear, meaning the mechanically it'll be as good as new.

refurbed could also mean that it has possibly been a customer return and might not have even been used, so in other words it could be second hand but also brand new if ya get what i mean.

I didn't know this when i bought my second hand d40
How do i check the acutuation count ? is it something i can do or does it have to be done by a pro / dealer.

There's a bit of free software you can download to check Nikons - I don't think it works for Canon.
You might have to Google around a while as I've forgotten what it's called, but it's out there.
Might be worth downloading Opanda as that might just do it for you, if not it's a handy EXIF viewer anyway.
EDIT: Yes, Nikon hides the shutter count in the EXIF, Canon doesn't. IT's possible to check certain pro level Canon's but there's no way (as far as I can determine) to find out the count on low/medium end Canon DSLRs

That's normally the case for manufacturer refurbs I understand.

Re: canon 500d/T1i
It's worth pointing out that you can't just take a picture and look at the filename to determine shutter count - even if the camera's always been set to continuous numbering.
