    Default Nick Clegg's election promises

Lets make a list of which ones he's broken so far:

    He'd vote against drastic cuts
He'd oppose the building of new nuclear power stations
    He'd oppose renewal of trident
He'd work towards abolishing tution fees (rather than doubling them at least if not more)

He was unaware of the size of the debt don't ye know. It's not like all the accounts were readily available to him and every other politician.

Normally I'd be the last to defend these sell out charlatans (I hope I am right in thinking that this cost union will all but see the end to the party come the next election) but in the middle of all this I think it's important to look a concessions they've got from the Tory's as a matter of balance.

Christ knows how bad it would have been if these snakes hadn't been there to reign the Tories in slightly.

Raising the threshold at which people start paying income tax to £10,000
Freeing 3.6 million low earners and pensions from income tax completely
Restoring the link between the basic state pension and earnings
Taxing capital gains at the same rates as income (moved in that direction)
Introducing a Banking Levy so that banks pay for the financial support they have received

If they hadn't been there the Tories would have had to govern with a minority (I suspect a Lib-Lab coalition would have been untenable). For all that people speculate that there'd then inevitably have been another election which the Tories would have won outright, it's essentially conjecture.

I think they've paid a big price for 'softening the edges' of the Tories, when that could largely have been achieved through the normal mechanisms of parliament with a minority government. But then perhaps its unfair to judge so early; I'll give them a full term, cos I'm git nice like that, me.

What's the point? If the Lib Dems had somehow won a majority, you might have a case but the Tories are the biggest party and calling the shots. Labour won outright majorities in 1997, 2001 and 2005 and still reneged on their pre-election promises, go and bleat at them.

An erstwhile and much respected former local MP describes him as the biggest charlatan in his party, and one of the greatest in Westminster

I just describe him as a koont

Not conjecture that this country would have had weak government at a time of financial trouble though.
