Default Mac users dodgy iWork or Office advice needed

Hi, having only ever used Windows OS before I need some advice about iWork and office. I can find my way around office but is iWork much different? I wouldn't dream of paying for Mac Office, but I am sure newsgroups will solve that problem, but would consider buying iWork via higher education prices. Or should I try open source?

I have a mac with iwork and the actual word (pages) and excel (numbers) apps are ok, but take a little time to get used to.

I think numbers is much more user friendly - ie tables and calculations can be dragged/resized much more easily.

iworks reads MS word/excel documents ok and you can save/export them in MS compatible format.

If you can get anything free I guess that'll be the best option - you seen a bright sort so I'm sure you will figure the iworks apps quickly

Interface etc is set out like office, infact it's a total rip off of MS Office but free.
