Mystery surrounds an announcement on Cristiano Ronaldo's website that he is the father of a baby boy.

The message on the Real Madrid footballer's internet page does not name the mother, but says the child will be under his "guardianship".

It appeared on the star's official site, linked to his Twitter and Facebook pages, in the early hours of this morning.

However, hours later, the star's Twitter account was mysteriously suspended - leading to speculation that Ronaldo's online presence had been hacked into.

But Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manha has reported "Gestifute," the company which is run by the player's agent, as having confirmed the news.

According to the paper, which did not give a further source, "the baby's mother is from North America and she had her child in early June."

His family are preparing the paperwork to bring the child to Portugal where he will be raised, it reported.

It also said a friend of the footballer had confirmed his mother Dolores and sisters Elma and Katia are preparing the documentation to bring the child to Europe.

Ronaldo's statement reads: "It is with great joy and emotion that I inform I have recently become father to a baby boy.

"As agreed with the baby's mother, who prefers to have her identity kept confidential, my son will be under my exclusive guardianship."

The former Manchester United winger, 25, has been recently linked to 24-year-old Russian swimwear model Irina Shayk.
