first and second world war books, suggestions?
Just finished forgotten voices of the first world war and have thus finished my war book collection. Need some new ones lads, any you would suggest?
Off the top of my head I've recently read:
Forgotten voices of the holocaust (which is by far and away the most harrowing book I've ever read)
The battle for stalingrad
Berlin
Band of brothers
The pacific
Any ideas? Love to read the Stalingrad ones, that was one hell of a battle!

I recommend this, not just 1st and 2nd world wars, just short essays about what might have happened in various wars.

For WW1 have a look for books by Lyn Macdonald, she's written about 5. Martin Gilbert - The First Day on the Somme is a classic. Richard Holmes - Tommy is a good book on the life of a soldier on the Western Front. The War the Infantry knew by Captain Dunn is alo a classic.

Cheers lads I'll look them all up. The bravery of the men and the (at times) stupidity of top brass astounds me. Looks like I'll be spending a fair bit today

Blood red snow. Twilight of the gods. Model Hitlers favorite general.
The forgotton soldier. Guy Sajer is a classic
Recommend, One square mile of hell and With the old breed. (Pacific War)
Quartered safe out here (Probably the best book on the war in Burma) by George McDonald Fraser
Armageddon and Nemesis Max Hastings. A must if you want an overview of the last year of WW2
Loads more if you want let me know?

Try "Storm Of Steel" for a different viewpoint

For a different twist, try Spike Milligan's series of books about his War service. They're obviously very funny but quite infornative and sad in places. The first one is Adolf Hitler, My Part in His Downfall iirc.

As John Keegan said, "a great memoir" with extraordinarily vivid writing, bringing to life the stress, horror and anxiety of war. This book lifts the lid on the private soldier's perceptions of his comrades and leaders and should be read by anyone who aspires to leadership in whatever capacity. Alec Bowden's struggle with his fears and temptations provide a fascinating insight into human nature, his leaders influence on his spirit a great lesson.
