    Default Night photography

This isn't something I've done a lot of, but I've seen some great stuff on here so I thought I'd head out tonight give it go.

    Here's the generic motorway shot;

And here are a couple from by the airport (the higher of the 2 trails on this un was a plane landing)

That last one was probably shot on too big an aperture - had a second one on a higher f stop on the go (after waiting 30 minutes in the cold for a fucking plane), but my battery died half way through the shot. Arses.

I've got a lot to learn, but it's good fun.

Nice. I've always liked wandering around in the early hours, you see familiar places in a new (lack of) light. Especially in the snow.

Bot all snow here now unfortunately.

Thinking about going for a proper explore over the weekend. It's actually canny relaxing.

nice efforts Spav, cant beat going out on a night, i much prefer it to daytime photography and i think you learn more about using your camera too, i knew when i got my sony dslr that night time pics were what i wanted to do, always enjoyed looking at them more than daytime and also seeing Andy M's pics too, huge insperation!

and it is very relaxing at times but can be a bit edgy too when your wandering around with about £500 worth of equipment in the middle of nowhere and there's suddenly a rowdy gang of pissed up charvers show up, just gotta keep your wits about you.

I worked it out recently that if I had to buy all the kit that I keep in my bag brand new, it'd cost in the region of £5k. Now, I bought the vast majority second hand so it cost me nowhere near that, but there has been a few times I've been walking around where I work (north inner city Dublin) and suddenly got the fear.

Just out of interest, what's your typical settings for night photography?

Relaxing indeed, in fact last night when I was out I just lay back in the snow lit a fag and was watching the stars for about 20 minutes.
Sky was absolutely amazing, seen as their is very little light polution here.
Shame I am leaving in the morning just as I am getting to grips with the camera.
No doubt I will be back at some point though.

well that depends, if its light painting then i usually go for a high F.stop like f6 or something but other night time shots can differ depending on surrounding's, if there is street lamps in the shot then i usually go for F22 to get the good starburst effects, and i almost always use bulb mode leaving the lens open for a while, also depends on the ambient light in area too....best thing to do is to just play about really and take a few shots of the same thing with different settings and see which one you prefer best i guess.

Took this one in the fog we had here on Friday night.

Looks awful in colour with all the yellow sodium so I took the colour out!

For some reason the picture didn't show on the board but I clicked through to Flickr.

Love the B&W treatment - very moody
