I just don't know how a country can hope to progress, when their government sanctions the killing of its citizens.

A ridiculous way of dealing with people. It's immoral, it panders to the lowest common denominator, and the evidence all tells us that it doesn't act as a deterrent.

I've got qualms over it myself, as I had with the execution of Saddam. Not overly sure where I stand on it, being massively anti-capital punishment anyway.
